What kind of relationship do you have with your target audience?
If you aren’t communicating with them through print marketing materials, you might not know them as well as you think. The good news is that if you already have modern Xerox office equipment, you have everything you need to strengthen that relationship.
In this post, we’re going to discuss the demographics that respond well to print—and you might find some surprises along the way.
Which Demographics Respond Negatively to Print Marketing?
None.
If that sounds like a bold statement, read on for clarification.
It is true that in a broad sense there are no sizable demographics that marketing analysts have determined will universally respond negatively to print marketing. Not-a-one.
You can, of course, narrow down your demographics for different results. The demographic of people who, say, have specifically (and perhaps vehemently) opted out of receiving print newsletters or coupons in the mail would qualify as having a negative response to print marketing. A demographic of Russian people would respond negatively to print advertisements written in Swahili, and so on.
These arguments are just splitting hairs. When you look at demographics in a broader sense—age, gender, income, level of education—there isn’t any data to indicate that print marketing isn’t a valuable addition to a company’s marketing strategy, whether it ranges in size from startup to enterprise.
But What About Millenials?
Here’s a statistic that’s probably going to shock you at least a little bit: out of all age groups, millenials are the most likely to read print direct mail marketing campaigns.
That’s right. Millenials respond better to print marketing than Gen Xers, Baby Boomers, or anyone else.
Marketing analysts have more or less reached a consensus that print mail works really, really well with the millenial audience. One such study has even put the number of millenials who read print direct mail as high as 77%.
Why this is the case is open to debate, but one could easily argue that so many businesses are exclusively focusing on digital advertisements to millenials—they are the most active internet users, after all—that when a millenial does happen to get a tangible print advertisement, they’re bound to notice it.
Print as Part of an Overall Marketing Strategy
The internet and “always connected” technology has irrevocably changed the way marketing budgets are spent, likely for the rest of the lives of anyone reading this post. However, to say that digital marketing should be the only advertising channel for a business desiring the most growth and reach would be foolish.
As with most financial matters, diversification is key. Even for businesses with a strong focus on digital advertising, print should be a part of their overall marketing strategy. This really becomes apparent when you consider that a millenial might receive over five hundred promotional emails in only a single week, compared to a scant 20-or-so print advertisements.
Plus, let’s not forget that aren’t any “ad blockers” for print!
