Technology has impacted every facet of our lives from how we communicate to how we make purchases to looking for and securing jobs. Today, it’s practically an expectation to have a personal brand that reflects your success if you want to be taken seriously and in order to do that, there are several qualities that either signal leadership and capture our attention or make us uncomfortable – depending on how well they’ve been mastered.
Here are five barriers that might be preventing your career dreams from becoming reality:
Public speaking:
It’s feared by many and dreaded by more. You’ve been asked to stand up and give a presentation – ugh! Your voice quivers, knees buckle and magically you’re sweating in places you didn’t realize could sweat. Welcome to public speaking. Lucky for you, there are techniques worth mastering that aren’t difficult but will help you next speaking engagement shine!

Take a compliment:
Here’s a stunning statistic; nearly 70% of people become embarrassed or uncomfortable when getting recognition for having done good work. Yikes! It really shouldn’t be like that, should it? Data science:
If you hated math in school – raise your hand. If you know it could improve your job performance through data analysis, raise your other hand. Right. With the onset of digital transformations impacting everything we do from marketing to exercise, and the sheer volume of big data being collected every second of every day, there are practically no careers that can be free from data analysis at this point. It’s time to get better at it!

Rise and shine – early:
You remember Ben Franklin, right? Right. He had some good ideas like “early to bed and early to rise makes a (wo)man healthy, wealthy and wise.” That’s good advice since mornings are when we’re at our peak performance. Yes, it might be tough to get adjusted to the shift in sleep schedule but with practice it becomes easier. And this isn’t to say you leap out of bed onto a yoga mat, the point isn’t to see how fast you can get active, it’s just as productive to curl up in a comfy chair and read yourself awake with a nice hot cup of coffee as it is to hit the ground running.

Recognize constructive criticism:
It’s easy to internalize constructive criticism as someone else pointing out your “flaws” but it can also be a fantastic opportunity for improvement and leveling yourself up. Start by practicing the art of allowing your knee-jerk initial reaction to subside in order to really listen and open yourself to the opportunity for improvement. Of course, while honing your skills here to accept criticism, also apply these principles to giving it – the delivery is just as important and the receiving.
