Modern Xerox devices, such as those from the AltaLink and VersaLink product lines, are equipped with an Embedded Web Server (EWS). Older devices may have the CentreWare Internet Services platform. Regardless of the platform your device uses, the purpose of this feature is to provide a web-based user interface for the device.
In other words, these features make it possible to visit a special address using your browser, on a device connected to the same network the printer is on. By visiting the machine’s IP address, you can monitor and manage the Xerox device using a simple-yet-comprehensive user interface.
The Benefits of Being Able to Remotely Configure Your Xerox Device
Being able to configure your Xerox device from a computer across the room or perhaps in another office entirely brings many benefits to the table. To configure the machine, you don’t have to be physically present at it. Many users find it easier to use a computer to make very specific configuration choices.
The EWS allows administrators to monitor the machine, troubleshoot problems, and get useful reports and statistics about the machine, such as how much paper and ink supply is remaining. The user interface can also be used to sign up for a variety of Xerox services, such as automatic supply replenishment.
There are a few caveats to being able to properly use the web user interface for your device. Of course, the printer must be networked—the EWS cannot be accessed through a USB connection. The feature must also be enabled, though this is true by default for most devices. Finally, and this is rarely an issue for users, the browser you’re using to access the device’s interface must support JavaScript (all modern web browsers do).
